Respiratory Fit Testing

Before an employee may be required to use any respirator with a negative or positive pressure tight-fitting face piece, he must be fit tested with the same make, model, style, and size that will be used.

Qualitative Fit Test (QLFT) is used only to fit test negative pressure air-purifying respirators that must achieve a fit factor of 100 or less and shall be accomplished by temporarily converting the respirator user's actual face piece with a negative pressure respirator with appropriate filters. Then apply irritant smoke or ISOAMYL ACETATE around the face piece to detect any leak.

Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT) is used only to fit test respirator equal to or greater than 100 pressure tight fitting half face respirators or equal to or greater than 500 for tight fitting full facepiece respirators and shall be accomplished by modifying the facepiece to allow sampling inside the facepiece in the breathing zone of the user, midway between the nose and the mouth.

Note: Prior to fit testing the required questionnaire should be completed and signed off by a physician or PLHCP along with the completion of a pulmonary function test. Also before any fit test can be conducted the employee must present the pulmonary function from the physician and must be clean shaven.
